Thread: Looking to buy a Pangolin, what upgrades should I get?
i have been ubuntu user 2 years now, , have been using thinkpad t60 schoolwork, , thinking new laptop. sure want pangolin performance, unsure on whether upgrade ram , processor , else.
using typical student uses for: watching movies, surfing net, maybe little pspp, , little openarena or tremulous. far t60 has done me fine in need school, i'm not looking shell out bunch of money speed never use. upgrades think should get?
ubunchu, of suggestions depend on intended use computer. if going buy laptop myself, here order.
upgrade 1 of core 2 duo chips. t6500 if desktop replacement. p8700 if going use on battery power because draws less power , give better battery life.
4 gigs of ram, 8 gigs if planning run vm windows. if planning run 64 bit ubuntu. 32 bit supports 4 gigs of ram max.
specify 500gb hd storage, unless planned run laptop on battery. consider solid state drive (ssd). have decide if increased cost justified.
since laptop gets 2.5 hours of battery life, buy spare battery if planned use laptop on long plane/train trips. if going use laptop in 2 specific locations, work , home example, may want buy second ac adapter. reduce weight , amount of stuff daily commute.
special considerations: if planning run multiple resource intensive applications @ same time, multiple virtual machines (vm,) or gpu intensive applications rendering animations, buy powerful cpu , ram can afford. in fact, if plan do kind of work, might want consider serval professional.
if want "bang buck" specify: core 2 duo t6500, 4 gigs ram, 500gb hdd. buy myself. hope helps.
