Thread: Windows PCs on my network cannot address Ubuntu machine by hostname

i'm sharing internet connection , printer among 3 computers on lan. 2 of them use ubuntu , 1 use windows. printer attached 1 of ubuntu machines , filesharing on lan managed samba.

hostnames ubuntu machines are:

computera
computerb

hostname of xp machine is: computerc

since router assigns ips dynamically, address resources (such printer) via hostname rather ip. when i'm using ubuntu machine, can address other ubuntu machine hostname (rather ip 192.168.10.5 or something.) however, when i'm using windows machine , try ping either computera or computerb hostname, says hostname isn't recognized. windows machine can ping , access resources on ubuntu machines fine if provide correct ip.. since network uses dhcp, it's not practical.

question is, how can windows machines recognize hostnames of ubuntu machines?

hi:
newbie linux , had same problem. tried old trick of shutting down machines , started linux machines , windows machine. viola! machines recognized others. sure name work group windows , linux machinee same. said, still have not been able have new windows 7 machine open files on linux machines, though recognized. seems win xp job better win-7. go ubuntu forum , search. wealth of info on lot of these types of problems.
