Thread: ubuntu server + xfce4 - help

hi, i've installed ubuntu server , added packages fast / low mem version of xubuntu. more less did:

code:

apt-get install xfce4 xfce4-goodies xfce4-mixer alsa gksu slim firefox-3.5 gnome-icon-theme flashplugin-installer network-manager network-manager-gnome; apt-get purge synaptic

slim not in ubutnu repos btw.
have basic problem cannot solve myself, post.

1. cannot suspend / hibernate
when go menu -> log out -> hibernaste or suspend following message:

"suspend , hibernate supported through hal, unavailable"

hald running , when type this:

"true" returned

+ when run:

the suspend works. want run suspension menu , keyboard shortcut (fn + f1 on laptop)

2. cannot lock screen ctrl-alt l
have xscreensaver installed , running - shortcut available in gnome?

3. no sound
when try add mixer plugin xfce4 panel says;

gstreamer unable detect sound devices. sound system specific gstreamer packages may missing. may permissions problem.

gstreamer0.10-alsa installed. when run alsamixer in console can set levels still no sound.
alsa mixer (alsamixer) console works root. alsa xfce4-mixer works root. permissions problem, what.
after setting things root -> no sound.

4. network manager
permissions thing again. when run nm-applet regular user get:

run root works fine.

might add have start gnome services @ startup checked.
run gnome-keyring-daemon manually - not start automatically.

if can me of please do.

edit: when run suspend command regular user following:

so seems it's permissions error.

edit2: sound works root, seems permissions problem (except locking thing). ideas?

edit3: found way lock screen - bound ather keys in keyboard settings.
i'm left 1 general permissions problem.

come on guys, please help! if i'm asking wrong questions or i'm doing in wrong place please tell me.

found out solution nm-applet here: link
there 1 time when rebooted , both hibernation , nm-applet worked. don't know different tho.

anyway nm-applet seems work.
hibernation , gstreamer. anybody?

update: editing hal.conf fixed hibernation problem
still no idea sound.

clear - sound works root, , worked when installed full xubuntu.

on other hand when run regular user:

aplay -l (as regular user) returns nothing

update: adding user audio group fixed sound
