Thread: Made a mess of Karmic's sound

so, start @ beginning, had upgraded jaunty install karmic 1 on hp laptop intel hardware. worked fine, sound, peripherals, compiz, that. messed doing unrelated fiddling around, , had clean install. after that, had sound problems (and compiz problems, first things first, , need own thread elsewhere anyways).

first, had no sound headphones @ all, , there no option under sound preferences turn on headphone jack detection, set script manually each time log in, using preferences> startup applications. it:

amixer -c 0 sset 'headphone jack sense' unmute
this worked in turned on headphones, plugging in headphones didn't (and still doesn't) turn off speakers, giving sound in both places @ once. while trying fix this, tried reinstalling alsa packages synaptic, , when didn't work, tried this: http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1046137, didn't seem have effect. tried switching alsa oss, lost bunch of functionality, , made worse switched alsa. bunch of stuff still doesn't work.

@ moment, have sound firefox , system sounds, none movie or music player (i downloaded bunch , tried different ones). have thing runs on login, using aplay play .wav file. 1 plays right when login, , can make play again terminal, .wav file used play correctly terminal no longer does:

aplay: set_params:979: sample format non available
the sound preferences, , aplay -l detect no soundcards, lspci does, , /proc/asound/ doesn't exist. error combined facts implies might headers or modules thing, sudo apt-get install linux-generic says date. have no sound @ login screen, used work fine, , i'd because have custom sound put there myself rather proud of.

i've done lot of updating , reinstalling , trying alternatives to, , switching to, things pulseaudio , other related things, , i've done damnedest things way were, , think they're pretty close except above-mentioned differences, i'm not sure things @ right now.

clue did wrong, it, , how not again in future?

actually, exaile, music player, playing properly. still nothing out of rhythmbox, no login screen sound, , no sound on video. exaile's decided work, else same before.

Sketch upload fails with Java error (___REMOVE___/bin/avrdude)!

Arduino Uno + KTY81/210 temperature sensor

hi, sorry, new , unsure lot of things, need clarification. haven't found information explains how , why things work, "do this, that" i following guide ( arduino-thermistor-temperature-sensor-tutorial ) connect thermistor arduino uno. here temperature sensor information: temp. sensor 2000r +-1% to92 part.no.:   kty81-210 name:   temp. sensor 2000r +-1% to92 description:   2.5mm, 1980...2020ohm, -55...+150°c and here sensor's data-sheet: sensor data-sheet i have connected same way in guide. works , values being serial printed. what don't understand: 1. thermistor's , resistor's ohm value should equal, correct? in case 2000 ohm? 2. thermistor has ptc, i'm guessing have invert math or use ntc thermistor instead correct values?
