School projects question

i'm not trying jerk , can explain me why see of these school project questions appear instructor hands student arduino , bunch of part , tells them make without kind of teaching.
when went school taught theory , got building things. building simple project , working bigger , better things.
know seems no instruction @ throw student in deep end project totally out of scope of novice.
am missing here?

difficult know.
sometimes youngsters seem come ideas of own.
also seem impervious answering questions.
sometimes see questions suspicious until realise young , not understand asking.
