Setting configuration without flashing the firmware

i creating keyboard based on 32u4 processor (think arduino micro).  want able program macro's keyboard via desktop interface software (think windows, mac, linux).  thought keyboard set config mode (serial) via physical button/switch.  software configure keyboard via serial communications. 

my concern though don't want firmware flashable or downloadable.  have ideas how this?  make firmware read only?  have better idea how this?

any thoughts/comments appreciated!

did lock bits of atmega32u4?

Sketch upload fails with Java error (___REMOVE___/bin/avrdude)!
