Unable to open existing PDF files after downloading Adobe reader

i have advent 7085 pc windows xp home version 2002 service pack 2. after downloading latest adobe reader 8 cannot open of existing pdf files, nor can open new ones. have several times downloaded it, tried , found doesn't work have deleted system , rebooted. downloaded again same thing happen again. error message says adobe reader 8.1 has encountered problem , needs close. advised let microsoft know of problem.
please!!! there out there knows problem might , me resolve it?

i have downloaded adobe reader several times , each time program fails work after "successful" installation. double clicking on program icon...doble clicking on "exe" file , double clicking on pdf file fail start program, using install file have tried repair , remove , deleted install file download again , still program not come on.
is possibly registry problem?
i used use foxit reader because couldn't adobe reader work can't download bank or insurance document until "downloader" finds adobe installed so....
i must have adobe reader won't work

Error Message when accessing Adobe

i downloaded recent adobe reader 8.1 , having problems opening program. i receive error message "adobe reader 8.1 has encountered problem , needs close. sorry inconvenience" i'm using windows xp i have same problem after upgrading adobe reader 7 reader 8.1.2. have repaired without success @ least 5 times. have uninstalled, downloaded, , reinstalled reader 8.1.2 @ least 5 times no success in correcting issue. i run xp media center.
